Katie McHugh, MS, PhD Candidate (University of California, Davis)
I first came to the Chicago Zoological Society’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP) as a summer intern in 2000. After finishing my BS (2001) and MS (2002) degrees in Earth Systems (Biosphere track) from Stanford University, I began working towards a PhD in animal behavior at the University of California, Davis in 2004. For my dissertation research, I am again working with SDRP, where I primarily conduct field work on juvenile bottlenose dolphin behavioral development and survival strategies in Sarasota Bay. However, I assist with other SDRP projects as needed, such as health assessment, population surveys, photo-identification, and rescue or monitoring efforts. Prior to returning to SDRP as a graduate student, I worked with several different cetacean research projects around the world, including spotted and bottlenose dolphin research in the Bahamas as well as dusky dolphin research in New Zealand. My main interests are behavioral ecology and conservation biology of small cetaceans.
